The thing I like the best about The Host was how realistic the characters are. I can relate to almost all of them, especially Wanderer. Everyone feels alone in the world at one point in their life, just like Wanderer did. We have also all been saved from doing something unnecessary and wrong by our friends, just like Wanderer was. The characters in The Host are all so realistic that I sometimes find myself wondering what they would do in my place when I'm not sure what to do. Even though the actual writing is far from perfect, Stephenie Meyer does an amazing job developing her characters, and I think others would find them just as interesting and complex as I do.
For a science fiction book, The Host is very believable. In real life, aliens are probably not going to come and take over Earth anytime soon. But, once you get past the fact that the main character is an alien living in a human body, the whole story is very realistic. Any person who had the same beliefs and morals as Wanderer would have help a friend get back to her family. Anyone who loved their family as much as Melanie did would have done everything they could to get back to them. Even though the main plot could never have happened, The Host has many smaller conflicts and plots that could happen to anyone.
